Chemical peels are dermatological treatments designed to address a variety of skin concerns by applying a chemical solution that exfoliates and removes the damaged outer layers of skin. This procedure is commonly used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, mild scars (including acne scars), uneven skin tone, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, melasma, and certain types of acne.
Superficial peels target the outermost skin layer and are effective for mild pigmentation, dullness, and minor textural issues, while medium and deep peels penetrate deeper to address more significant wrinkles, age spots, and moderate to severe pigmentation problems.
Chemical peels are not suitable for deep scars, severe wrinkles, or significant sagging, which may require alternative treatments such as laser resurfacing or surgery.
The type and depth of peel are chosen based on the patient’s skin condition, goals, and skin type, with caution advised for those with darker skin tones due to the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
