Condition Addressed
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to correct deformities and defects of the external ear, most commonly to
address prominent or protruding ears, also referred to as otapostasis or "bat ear."
This condition often results from underdevelopment or malformation of the ear cartilage, leading to ears that stick
out more than usual or appear disproportionately large.
Otoplasty can also be used to reshape, reposition, or reduce the size of the ears in cases of congenital anomalies
such as microtia (underdeveloped ear), anotia (absent ear), or to repair trauma-related deformities.
While prominent ears do not affect hearing or ear function, they can cause significant psychological distress,
especially in children, leading to self-esteem issues and social discomfort.
The goal of otoplasty is to create ears that are naturally proportionate and contoured, setting them closer to the head
and achieving a balanced, symmetrical appearance without obvious signs of surgical intervention.
